MLA and APA Formatting Guide
Learning to format now will save you a great deal of pain later! The MLA (Modern Language Association) format is for papers due for classes in the Humanities, such as English, Theater, and Art. The APA (American Psychological Association) format is for papers due in social science classes, such as Sociology, Psychology, and Anthropology.
Although there are other styles for academic papers, such as Chicago Style/Turabian Style for History or Social Studies, or CSE (Council of Science Editors) for Physics or Chemistry, I will only require you to learn the MLA and APA styles. You may, however, want to learn the CSE or Chicago Styles depending on your chosen academic field. Below, you will find links to the most well-known writing centers in the US university system. You will also find downloadable templates for MLA and APA papers. Be sure to use these resources before, during, and after writing papers for my class.
